Abstract:[Some remarks on the position of the diminutives in old Romanian, with special referance to The Divan or the Wise Man’s Dispute with the World or the Litigation between Soul and Body]
In this paper, we focus on some parts of the philosophical work The Divan or the Wise Man’s Dispute with the World or the Litigation between Soul and Body, which was printed in Romanian (and Greek) in 1698. The author is the Moldavian prince Dimitrie Cantemir who wrote the book imitating famous models that he knew from the didactic and gnomic literature and Western philosophy. We try to establish to what extent the alleged (in)compatibility of the diminutives with the cultivated language is plausible in the case of the old Romanian. We describe two types of diminutives: the ‘dedicatory’ type (diminutives which acquire a strategic function in the act of offering that is oriented to a patron) and the ‘paraphrastic’ type (diminutives which have a special function related to the specific habit of supporting some philosophical ideas through the Scriptural passages that are cited in an original manner, i.e. independently of the “official” versions in a given culture). Our hypothesis is that since allomorphy occurs in Romanian derivational morphology the diminutive suffixes cause stress change, they are not optimal. Although combinations of two identical suffixes are attested, they are rare and usually involve allomorphy. Recursive diminutive formation in a looser sense is also attested in old Romanian and in some context violates the CBO (which bans the possibility that a productive suffix may be followed by a less productive one).
