Abstract:The authors first present a short history of the Romanian language having developed under different historical conditions as compared to the other Romance languages. Then they describe the main Romanian grammars (starting with the book of S. Micu and Gh. Şincai, Elementa linguae daco-romane sive valachicae) and show the reasons for which they are to be deemed as “reference grammars”. At the end, they insist on the latest academic grammar (Gramatica limbii române, published in 2005), a modern ample synthesis of Romanian, which provides new solutions to delicate linguistic issues; at the same time, it reflects the theoretical progress linguistics has had, as well as the richness and diversity of studies dedicated to Romanian.
