Abstract: | The paper attempts to identify some characteristics of the functioning of polyphony and intertextuality in the theatre of the absurd. The research is based on the analysis of the dialogues in a well-known play by E. Ionesco: La cantatrice chauve (The bald singer). The author distinguishes between the characters’ communicative behaviour and the playwright’s general attitude as revealed by the text as a whole. Characters’ discourse is polyphonic only as far as it does not belong to them. It is made up of pre-existing texts, mechanically uttered, and of fake anecdotes of questionable sources, seemingly recirculated. The playwright position it is connected with polyphony as far as it involves the parody of a conversation style considered typical of certain middle-class groups in the modern society. |
