Abstract:The concept of dialogism is used in this paper in the spirit of Bakhtin's work, denoting a constitutive property of the discourse: every discourse results from the confrontation of two subjective horizons. In his analysis of the novelistic discourse, the Russian semiotician introduces the musical metaphor of polyphony, as manifestation of linguistic, semantic and social heterogeneity.
This paper considers two issues: the dialogic nature of the (monophonic as well polyphonic) novelistic discourse, and an investigation of the functions and effects of polyphony in this type of discourse. The analysis is based on a corpus of Gide’s texts – novels and soties.
Key words:discourse, novelistic discourse, dialogism vs. monologism, polyphony
