Abstract:It is expected that the number of migrant citizens will rise from 200 million, at the present date, to approximately one billion closer to the year 2050, and this will mostly be due to the massive climatic changes which will distress the existence of many populations from across the globe (Althause et al, 2010: 10 (5), 79).
In this context, medical care, highly qualified, focused on the patient, places us in the way of some very special situations, asking of the modern medic a quick adaptation to unexpected scenarios, which originate, parallel with the pathological challenge, from the sensitive area of cultural differences.
Many contemporary specialists are trained in universities abroad and accumulate, with the language, elements of culture and civilization, combined in a diverse experience, depending on the individuals met: colleagues, professors, collaborators and patients.
The University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Victor Babeș” from Timișoara has students from more than 50 countries.
Our paper analyses the necessity of forming transcultural clinical competences (CCT), through the assisted development of interactive capacities (from reflection over the self to narrative empathy) on a group of 22 Romanian and foreign students, participants of a narrative medicine workshop, built after the model of J. R. Betancourt, referring to the stages of communication and the health of the patient, and “narrative evidence based medicine” (NEBM), as defined by Rita Charon.
Key words:transcultural clinical competence, narrative empathy
