Abstract:The Septuagint version of the Book of Esther differs from the Masoretic Text (MT), both in the presentation of the theological message, and in the description of Haman’s identity. In the Septuagint, the theological message of the Book of Esther is detailed and “updated” in order to suit the context of the Alexandrian Jewish Diaspora, in an attempt to help its members become aware that Haman the Agagite is not their most fearsome enemy, but Hellenism itself, which undermines their national and religious identity. The Jews living in the Diaspora must be aware that their survival in such a milieu is guaranteed only in so far as they obey the requirements of God’s covenant and resist the pressure of assimilation.
Key words:The Book of Esther, Septuagint, national identity, covenant, Law
