Abstract: | The panegyric Gregory the Theologian devoted to Basil the Great was composed three years after the death of the latter. The text, that it might be a revised version of a delivered speech, after being corrected and amplified, clearly designs two distinct characters, with specific biographies, united nevertheless in an impressive unique friendship. Their encounter in Athens, during the studies they accomplished there, means in the same time embracing the cultural authority of the city: the biblical references and the echoes of the ancient culture are in a subtle equilibrium, more relevant as it belongs to a discourse elaborated during several years. |
