| Abstract: | [Absolute Superlative Expressed by an Adverbial(ised) Noun] The aim of the present paper is to uncover some of the properties of those Romanian adjectival phrases in which the post-adjectival intensifier is expressed by an adverbial(ised) noun in the singular. Our interest is both in adjectival phrases such as ud leoarcă ‘soaking/dripping wet’, gol puşcă ‘completely naked’, or singur cuc ‘completely alone/lonely’, as well as in participial structures such as îngheţat bocnă ‘frozen solid’, frecat lună ‘wiped very clean’, or bătut măr ‘beaten flat/to a pulp’. Our discussion extends to some similarities and differences between these two types of phrases/expressions with superlative value, and we bring arguments in favour of the idea that in the above participial structures the adjectival participle is stative resultative. |
