Abstract:[Remarks on the Use of Labels for Negative Attitude in Some Romanian Dictionaries]
The present study aims to investigate the labels for negative attitude which have been used in seven Romanian dictionaries, with a special focus on the selection of appropriate labels for specific categories of words and on how consistently label ascription has been made. To this effect I have investigated a total of 56 words that can express negative attitude towards an ethnic or religious group. I have analysed the labelling of negative attitude in the case of words (such as Turk) which have a ‘neutral’ meaning but have also developed senses that can be regarded as offensive. I have also examined a second category of words, those which are only used, with reference to persons, as ethnic slurs. The conclusions of my research have been that, while the percentage of labelling is relatively high for most of these words, there is more work to be done in terms of establishing a set of adequate and clear criteria which could then be used for the coherent and consistent ascription of labels for negative attitude.
