Abstract:This study aims to explain some specific and characteristic aspects of the semantic behavior of the adverb paradoxalement, as opposed to other adverbs also classified under the category of evaluative adverbs. This adverb highlights some very interesting questions that affect the object and the nature of the evaluative statement while invoking the need for concepts such as paradox, opposition and exception. After a general description of its main distributional and semantic properties in its use as a sentence adverb, this study looks at the linguistic instances associated to the concept of the paradox, in order to demonstrate that the paradoxical reading stems from the confrontation of two gnomic sentences when applied to a specific case. This leads to the concept of the “extraordinary exception” in that a paradox thus expressed is not about presenting an exception to a gnomic sentence, but about confronting, in an oppositional manner, a second gnomic sentence that is independent from the first one.
