Abstract:In this article, the author aims at comparing some key features present in the tales of Sindbad the Sailor with some precise passages of Homer’s Odyssey. Indeed, among other elements suggesting a connexion between both texts, one of the journeys of Sindbad seems directly inspired from the Greek poem. During his third voyage, Sindbad and other members of his crew have to deal with a huge giant who starts eating them one by one. Several elements of this episode remind the passage of Odysseus at Polyphemus’ place in Homer. The common structure of both stories as well as some precise details make the influence of the Greek text on the Arabic one very likely. At least one other passage of the adventures of Sindbad seems also influenced by the Odyssey. The article synthesizes the very few articles and commentaries on this matter and proposes some new reflexions on the issue.
