Abstract: | Located in Central Africa, Spanish Guinea had three Bantu languages and two Creole languages. Faced with multilingualism, the Spanish colonial authorities adopted a language policy. Spanish became the teaching, administrative and justice language. This language policy was reflected in place names. It created new denominations. Indeed, place names are linguistic markers of space. We study the language policy and the origins of place names in Spanish Guinea. To that end, we rely on colonial legislation, maps, reports and memories of colonial administrators. |
Key words: | language policy, multilingualism, place names, Spanish Guinea, Spain |
