Abstract:[Expressing the Reciprocal Complement in Old Romanian] The author focuses on the reciprocal complement, one of the most important structures of the reciprocity, and compares the old Romanian structures and the modern Romanian ones. The author deals with the following problems: the inventory of several Romanian verbs with a reciprocal interpretation (two types of reciprocal verbs: symmetric and asymmetric); subject and object oriented reciprocity; the most frequent ways of expressing reciprocal complement attested in old Romanian (the corpus includes texts of the 16th century – the beginning of the 17th century).
The article highlights the different semantics and syntactic properties of the reciprocal complement, and analyses the three main manners of expressing reciprocal complements: by a prepositional group, by Dative constructions or Realization 0 (when the reciprocal complement is not lexicalized).
