[The Epistemic Marker Mătincă – A Case of Pragmaticalization] The aim of this paper is to present the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic evolution of mătincă (‘I think’) – an epistemic marker which has in its basic structure a semantic predicate (‘I'm afraid’) and a complementiser (‘that’). I will argue that mătincă represents a case of grammaticalization in its first stage of evolution, and, in the last stage mătincă develops pragmatic functions as a result of pragmaticalization process.
