Abstract:The present study focuses on the theological and ideological tenets that made up the community boundaries in the Persian province of Yehud (Judah). Because most of the biblical literature was at least revised during the post-exilic period, it was assumed that narrative texts from the Pentateuch, the so-called Deuteronomistic History, Ezra-Nehemiah and the Chronicles could be read as challenging views about the gradual participation of different tribal and ethnic groups to the sacral community of “people of Israel” identified with the Golah (returnees from the exile). Deut 7:1-2 and 23:1-3, 7-8; Ezr. 9:1-2, 11-12; 1 Sam. 15; Judg. 4 and 5; Gen. 34 and 49 and 1 Chr. 21:6-8 are analyzed against the specific background of the Achaemenid period, with the conclusion that an ideological conflict model fits best with the social and historical settings.
