Abstract: | The present study dwells on Richard Wagner’s novel, Habseligkeiten, starting with its structural resemblance to the novel Muren von Wien, and it especially emphasizes the new themes related to the nexus of problems concerning the emigrants, as follows: the negative image of Romania, which emphasizes the abuses during communism era and the effects of the totalitarian state on this country and its inhabitants, the negative image of the Banat Swabians and the negative image of Germany. This nexus of themes converges to the central theme of the novel, the threefold homelessness position of the first person narrator, who, therefore, belongs neither to German minority in Romania nor to the Germans in Germany. The inquiry also deals with the opposite types of emigrants depicted by Wagner in his novel. |
