Abstract:The paper analyses why Patrick Süskind’s The Perfume passes for a brilliant example of postmodern novel. The inquiry starts with the attempt to define postmodernism and lays stress on its characteristics such as the blurring of separation between the educational elite and the mass culture, and on intertextuality. The main part of the inquiry analyses the intertextual elements of the novel, demonstrating that intertextuality is the most important feature of Patrick Süskind’s novel.
