Abstract:Scene V, 45 of Kraus’s play presents a drunk officer, whose sabre is held by a prostitute. He is particularly offended by the fact that a young butcher takes the weapon from the girl and thus touches the symbol of an officer’s honour. This motif strongly resembles the central theme of Arthur Schnitzler’s short story Lieutenant Gustl of 1900. Although a relation between Schnitzler’s text and Kraus’s play cannot be definitely established, it is likely that the satirist refers to the earlier story, thus enlarging the scope of his attack on the Austrian-Hungarian officers. The scene, added to the play after 1919, also has a satirical function concerning the politics of the early Austrian republic.
