Abstract: | Since the late 19th century, there have been more or less official tendencies to institute an Austrian literary canon as opposed to the general canon of literature written in German. These tendencies were enforced by the Dollfuß government in the thirties and in the renewed republic after the end of the German annexation. Government-funded literary reviews such as Monatsschrift für Kultur und Politik (1936-1938) or Wort in der Zeit (1955-1965) supported this cultural policy, while independent reviews like Die Fackel (1899-1936) and das silberboot (1935-1936, 1946-1953), though honouring the literary tradition, included the whole of German language literature. Some mechanisms of canon formation in general can be derived from these observations. |
