Abstract:[Language and Silence in Waiting for Godot] It has become a sort of ‘commonplace’ for contemporary literary criticism to emphasize the disarticulation of language in the theatre of the absurd both at the level of the thematic concerns of the authors and at the level of the discourse of the play itself. The aim of our study is to exemplify this innovative characteristic of the new theatre which testifies of a unique style in drama writing in relation to one of the exponents of the Absurd, Samuel Beckett, and his most well-known literary production, Waiting for Godot. We shall focus on such concepts as the infirmity of language, on the choice of vocabulary, on the progression of dialogue, on non-sense and contradictions, and on the use of silence as a stylistic device.
