Abstract: | In this article I review certain essential requirements before reading a theological text, requirements that were frequently emphasized in patristic or neo-patristic literature. I will first make reference to Nicetas Stethatos and his Introduction to the Hymns of St. Symeon the New Theologian. There he mentions the “cleansing of passions” as one of such inescapable requirements. He then immediately calls it a “philosophical act”, a philosophy with a practical and preparatory sense. Next, I will focus on certain attitudes related to this preparatory philosophy: the reorientation of the attention (visio speculativa), a new understanding of the temporal world and of the self, the caution in regard to allegorical reading and the assumption of truths in paradoxical or antinomic sentences. |
