Abstract: | In this text we discuss the importance of phonetic, semantic, etymological and geolinguistic criteria for identifying the origin of Slavic loanwords in Romanian. In most cases, such features allow chronological stratifications of the word stock under question. Some cases are represented by Romanian dialectal words of limited spreading, which are not known in the literary language. Others display early attested forms that are reflexes of old Slavic words that are now out of use. They can be identified with the help of reconstruction using the methods of historical phonetics. Certain etymologically difficult cases can be solved by considering and reconstructing situations of contamination. Slavic loanwords in Romanian are not a homogeneous mass: There is a differentiation possible according to languages and dialects of origin, and a differentiation according to the period of the respective loan-process. |
