Abstract:[A formal perspective on the replacement of infinitives with subjunctives]
Historical studies tell us that the replacement of the infinitive with the subjunctive in Romanian had a very late onset (around the 16th century) compared to the other Balkan languages. This paper reconsiders this statement from the perspective of generative grammar. It is argued that the inherited Latin infinitive has been replaced in Romanian more or less at the same time as other Balkan languages had their infinitive replaced, and that the a-infinitive is a later product that has incurred replacement around the 16th century. The conclusion is that there are two waves of infinitive replacement in Old Romanian, and that the onset of replacement is syntactically (versus morphologically) triggered.
