Abstract:This paper intends to analyze Carmen Sylva’s translation of the Romanian ballad Miorita in German. The choice of this translation in particular is justified by the translator’s German origin and her life spent in Romania, on the one hand and her intense activity as a writer, on the other hand. Analyzing a literary translation obviously implies a critical perspective upon it. A parallel analysis of the Romanian original text and Carmen Sylva’s translation in German reveals certain sore spots, which could otherwise be referred to as translation mistakes, in this case belonging to the lexical and semantic field. However the purpose of this paper in revealing such mistakes is not necessarily to underline them or come up with a better option – which could be a topic for future research – but rather to emphasize the difficulty of translating folk literature from one language to another, even if the translator is naturally accustomed to both languages.
Key words:semantic and lexical analysis, folk language, equivalence in translation, accurate translation
Language: German
