Abstract:[Military Latin and its impact on mentalities (IV)]
Almost every army in NATO uses Latin phrases as maxims, military mottoes or sententiae with a strong mentality-focused character. Military Latin is thus very rich, very much alive and is therefore highly suggestive even now, in the 21st century, effectively highlighting the specifics of military art. The Latin maxims analysed in this part of our study use expressions of the Latin classics, or phrases, or simple words which are highly expressive yet. The most impressive are the verbs which are numerous in military Latin, whether they are in the personal moods, or impersonal moods they are usually action verbs. Adjectives and adverbs follow them in terms of frequency and most of them have degrees of comparison.
Many armies repeatedly use the same Latin maxim as a motto, demonstrating once again the perenniality of the language of the Eternal City, a city founded by the sons of the Roman god of war.
Key words:military Latin, war, mentality, parts of speech, expressiveness
