Abstract:Under Habsburgic occupation for almost a century and a half (1774-1918), Bucovina was subjected to a large process of Germanisation, whose effects were experienced, among others, also at toponymical level. Concerned in arranging the ownerships, the Habsburgic administration initiated, after 1781, two big actions in order to settle the borders of the villages and to draw up the survey plans. After these approaches, the toponyms from Bucovina underwent important graphic and phonetic changes, they had been translated or even replaced. After the Union of Bucovina with Romania, in 1918, the Romanian authorities disposed the set up of a ministerial commission in charge of the re-Romanisation of the toponymy from the Habsburg Bucovina. This measure, although had some weak points, succeeded in reaching some major objectives like restoring the Romanian method of writing the Germanized toponyms from Bucovina and returning to the Romanian forms of the toponyms that had been translated.
