Abstract:
  • In Latin, there are nouns which are generally used in the plural or which have forms for the two numbers, but different meanings in the singular. This is the category of the pluralia tantum nouns. Our study has focused upon the pluralia tantum nouns used by Latin onomastics. According to the semantic content, we have classified them in ten categories. We have found pluralia tantum nouns in the dictionaries of the Latin language in order to classify them, our aim being to discover the thought modality which led to their creation or the logical and semantic motivations that brought them in use in the plural. Latin onomastics makes a wide use of pluralia tantum nouns: they appear as toponyms, ethnonyms, oronyms, divine and profane names, names of feasts and public entertainment, astronyms, etc. This type of productivity and frequent occurrence, especially within onomastics, draws our attention and deserves deeper scientific research.
