Abstract:The work of Henry Bauchau, European Francophone writer originally from Belgium, can be, undoubtedly, put under the sign of Identity. His work relates an itinerary with very strong autobiographical implications, whether it’s his novels, his poems, his plays or pages of his journals. From L’Escalier bleu (1964) to Œdipe sur la route (1990) or Le Boulevard périphérique (2008), the writer tells the story of a life composed of journeys and failures, of search and suffering, all of this being put on the canvas of the Great History who determines the small facts of the real existence. Bauchau also values the virtues of writing, sometimes mixed with psychoanalysis, because the mission of art is to render reality and to rebuild the identity by keeping in the center the self and it’s connection to the past, to the Other, to itself and to language, by means of writing which becomes a testimony.
