Rezumat:[Arabic – Diglossia, plurilingualism and multilingualism within the Arabic linguistic space]
Just like all the other languages, Arabic is characterized by the co-existence of different levels of speech, influenced by historical, cultural and social features.
Modern Standard Arabic presents a particular unmet situation in any other language. On the one hand, it has a standard variant, literary or written language, which the Arab researchers called al-fuṣḥā (high level). On the other hand, there are several spoken varieties of the language; they usually vary from one Arab country to another and even from an Arab region to another within the same country. There is also a lower level (low level), which is identified in all cases with the spoken variant of each language with idioms or spoken dialects.
Along with standard or literary variant, Arabic is characterized by several spoken variables more or less different from one country to another and even from one area to another within the borders of either the current Arab countries. This “duality” (izdiwāğiyya luġawiyya) is very old, both levels dating from the period prior to Islam. In other words, the phenomenon diglossia has a very long historical tradition, in terms Arabic. In this article, the author aims to identify some of the features of diglossia, multilingualism and plurilingualism in the Arab geographical area.
