| Rezumat: | [About the “Romanian feeling of cacophony”] This study is the most extensive approach so far to one of the most common stylistic phenomena in the Romanian language – cacophony (from the Greek kakos ‘bad’, phonos ‘sound’). It consists of the “clash” of the last syllables of a word and the beginning of the following word, a situation that makes the listener or reader think of something vulgar. Although this violation of the Romanian language style (the same as pleonasms, anacolutha and reiterations) has taken an unprecedented magnitude nowadays under the impact of the boom of media technologies, this phenomenon is not a novelty in the Romanian culture. Among others, this study refers to the opinions about cacophony issued by several Romanian classical writers (such as I. L. Caragiale, Titu Maiorescu, Vasile Alecsandri, Ion Heliade Rădulescu and Alecu Russo). The paper continues with the categorisation of cacophonies and possibilities to avoid them, and ends with resulting conclusions. |
