Rezumat:Popular culture almost confiscated J.R.R. Tolkien and his work, turning them into a hugely successful brand that epitomises glorious consumerism, harsh rebellion against the social or/and cultural establishment(s), and elaborately kitschy escapism (which is appaulingly ironic, since Tolkien did have in mind Recovery, Escape and Consolation as precious spiritual gifts that fairy tales and fantasies offer to their readers; only, to him, Escape meant superior salvation from evil circumstances, not autistic withdrawal from real life and responsabilities).
But, as it turns out, Tolkien’s fans true to the object of their affection cannot miss a crucial detail: far from promoting bitter scepticism, individualism and separatism, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, Silmarillion and all the rest of Tolkien’s legendarium plead for humility, steady faith, togetherness, mutual trust and respect. Tolkien’s work conveys a message of love, patience and hope. In Tolkien’s view, the power of fantasy does not reside in seduction or manipulative fascination, but in pure, unconditional love.
