The purpose of this article is to describe the linguistic situation of Italy analyzing data concerning the use of regionally distinctive varieties of the language and standard Italian and providing an analysis on the most obvious linguistic features of the different regional dialects spoken in Italy. Although during the last years the influence of standard Italian has been stronger, the paper illustrates that in many parts of Italy regional dialects are still in use and regional varieties of the language have not completely disappeared, as it seems that they are no more socially stigmatized by most people. Finally the author completes the linguistic general view of Italy taking into consideration the numerous minority languages still spoken in Italy.
