It is our intention to discuss the uses of the French word étranger, especially as a noun, by using a corpus taken from the general Francophone press, mainly from Switzerland. Our hypothesis is that, depending on whether the referent in question is a wealthy person or not, the use of the term varies significantly. Therefore, the noun étranger is recurrently omitted when the foreigner is a wealthy person or even if not being rich comes from a country that does not export workforce. In this case, the words employed are usually tax-dodger/tax exile and expatriate respectively. In contrast, the word is employed so as to avoid other expressions with more negative connotations such as immigrant, ethnic minority, foreign delinquent and similar ones. In these cases, it is the object of a cognitive amalgam.
