The paper examines the conditions under which it is allowed to omit direct objects in Romanian. The analysis reaches the conclusion that, like in other languages, in Romanian there are four main types of constructions which allow for the direct object deletion: constructions with null anaphora, constructions in which the verb bind empty variables, constructions in which the empty variable is bound by a hidden operator (in Heim’s style) and constructions with empty cumulative direct object. The general conclusion is that the phenomenon of unexpressed direct object cannot by explained by a single device, as it is hypothetized in the Romanian transformational literature which analyzed the phenomenon extensively.
