Rezumat:The present study explores the parallel between two significant concepts that contemporary socio-cultural theories currently use: “episteme”, theorised by Foucault în 1966 and “paradigm”, the core-concept proposed by Th. Kuhn four years earlier. Based on a close text analysis, the study shows how the two knowledge-organising concepts operate, what are their relations with cultural, respectively, scientific traditions and how they were perceived (and mostly criticized) when Les mots et les choses and The Structure of Scientific Revolutions were brought out. Particularly concerned to emphasize how both authors saw the historical underground dialogue between science and humanities, the study also considers the profound connection that human mind traced between the two parties. The idea is that everything reconfigurate during an epistemic change, only the direction of influence has lately changed: Kuhn showed how sciences now imitate art, after centuries in which arts strived after resembling the rigurous sciences (see the problem of representation in visual arts). Last but not least, I also mention the differences between the two philosophers’ standpoints, which are significantly distinct in what the direction of their theories should be. Except for the negation of historical “progress”, which puts them together, the two positions remain distinct: Foucault refuses the science discourse and makes a career as a “relativist”, while Kuhn does not believe that science should overtake political issues.
