Quatre mois après la déclaration d’indépendance de l’Algérie, Jean-Marie Domenach et Camille Bourniquel co-dirigent le n°311 de la revue ESPRIT consacré à la langue française. Le titre choisi : Le français, langue vivante, est une réponse à ceux qui douteraient désormais du destin international de la France. Crainte peu fondée pour les deux écrivains qui considèrent que « pour être au niveau de la communication mondiale, pour entrer plus vite dans les secrets de la technique, des nations nouvelles recourent à des langues que l’histoire a dotées d’une fonction supra-nationale. Le français est l’une d’elles ». L’ensemble des articles rassemblés défend (ou plus rarement conteste) cette affirmation.
La francophonie, comme tout objet de réflexion, a une histoire. Cet article n’a d’autre ambition que d’en étudier une phase particulièrement émouvante.
Four months after the Declaration of independence of Algeria, Jean-Marie Domenach and Camille Bourniquel co-manage the 311th no. of Esprit magazine, which was dedicated to the French language. The title that was chosen French, a living language, was a response to those who began to doubt about the international destiny of France. This fear was not seen as being real by the two writers, who believed that “in order to be at the level of the worldwide communication, to penetrate more rapidly the secrets of the technique, the new nations use the languages historically endowed with a supranational function. French is one of them.” The mixture of the articles chosen for the present issue defend (or, in some rare cases, contest) this statement.
Francophony, as all the objects of reflection, has its own history. This article has no other ambition but to study a particularly dynamic phase of it.
