Rezumat:Interlinguistic subtitling represents not only the translation of a source language message into a target language, but also, at the same time, the transfer of an oral message into the written code. These features constitute linguistic constraints which translators must face in their work. The aim of this paper was to present the differences between the two modes from the point of view of the translation activity and to illustrate some of the solutions translators resort to in their attempt to preserve the expressiveness of the original text while observing the conventions of the written medium. The examples used are transcribed from the dialogue in one episode of the American sitcom Seinfeld (ep. 16 – The Heart Attack) and are accompanied by their Romanian translations. The findings indicate that, in general, translators eliminate the elements of the oral code and exploit the resources available in writing (punctuation, typographical conventions), relying on the fact that, while reading the subtitles, the viewer has access to the original composition to which they are added and from which they cannot be separated.
