| Rezumat: | With a few negligible exceptions, Coriolan Petranu wrote only about the art of Transylvania, Crişana, and Maramureş – territories inhabited by the Romanians who were part of the former kingdom of Hungary – as well as about the role and mission of the art historian in Transylvania. His only scientific goals were to know and research the artistic heritage of these provinces with a well-shaped historical and cultural identity. The Cluj based professor had the moral and national mission of drawing up a history of Romanian art from Transylvania, which hadn’t been done before. The question of what Romanians contributed to art history in the Intra-Carpathian region before 1918 naturally arose. Since Romanian high art was hard to define, poorly represented, and clearly inferior to the art sponsored or produced by Transylvanian Hungarians and Saxons, Coriolan Petranu focused to a large extent on Romanian vernacular architecture from Transylvania and Partium, and, especially, on religious architecture. |
