| Rezumat: | Günter Grass, author of the famous novel Die Blechtrommel (The Tin Drum) and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999, triggered an extremely controversial debate with his poem „Was gesagt werden muss“ [What Must Be Said] in April 2012 (first published on 4 April 2012 by the Süddeutsche Zeitung, La Repubblica und El País). Grass criticized that Israel’s atomic power was as a threat to world peace, and complained that Germany had “delivered yet another submarine to Israel”. Now, Grass argued, it was the time to break with the silence regarding this issue. This article focuses on different responses by literary figures, historians and politicians in Germany and Israel regarding the content of the poem and the personality and biography of Grass, who acknowledged in 2006 that he had been drafted into the Waffen-SS when he was 17 years old. |
