Abstract:[Paralinguistic Means of the Reported Speech in Conversation] The paralinguistic means used to separate the reported speech from the rest of the utterance, or to separate the reporting clause (Rom. discurs citant) from the reported clause (Rom. discurs citat) are represented by changes in the melodic contour of the utterance, changes in the pitch or intensity of the voice or changes in speaking tempo. The imitation of speaking appears quite often within the direct speech, the semi-direct speech and the false reported speech, implying a change in intonation. Changes in the speaking tempo appear most frequently in indirect speech. As to the internal monologue (internal speech), the low pitch represents the most frequent type of paralinguistic variation. The false reported speech is characterized by changes of intonation, tempo or pitch of the utterance. When there are no other paralinguistic means, only the change of intonation functions as a demarcation signal of a reported speech.
