Abstract:[A Contextual Perspective on Antonymy] Sîrbu (1977) distinguished between diagnostic and non-diagnostic antonymic contexts. He considered the former characteristic only to antonyms and a means to verify the antonymic status of two words. We show here, using a large corpus and modern research methods, that, in the case of antonymy, unlike in that of other semantic relations, one cannot speak about contexts specific to the co-occurrence of antonyms: such contexts are not specific to antonyms, they even allow the occurrence of words between which no semantic relation can be recognized; only in a small percent of the situations such contexts exhibit the co-occurrence of antonyms.
For the cases when there is a semantic opposition between two synonymy sets, we showed that antonymy is established at the word level rather than at the level of the whole synonymy set. Only in a very limited number of contexts each word in a synonymy set is used as the antonym of any word in the second synonymy set.
We conclude that antonymy is not a context-dependent relation, but has an immanent force of manifesting itself in context.
