Abstract:[Se zice and zice-se : one unit or two? Evidential Semantism and Contextual Functioning] This research aims at describing the functioning of se zice că and its counterpart zice-se in order to point to the differences between the two. The underlying hypothesis is that there is only one evidential indicator actualized as a stem and its derived form in order to communicate a more or less similar content. Although the linguistic community is put forward as the author of this report, the utterance is vague in point of the reporting speaker’s commitment to the truthfulness of the propositional content. The analysis reveals cases when the two units have a similar reported evidential functioning, but also contexts where zice-se occurs in a report whose origin source is mentioned. In these contexts, the indicator functions as a modal modifier communicating the speaker’s uncertainty with regard to the truthfulness of the content.
