| Abstract: | [Referential definite article vs expletive definite article: the situation of proper names] The paper analyzes the similarities and differences between the referential definite article (the definite article in noun phrases headed by other types of nouns than proper names) and the expletive definite article characteristic of proper names. Although there are a series of (especially inflectional) similarities between the two articles, the distributional-syntactic disparities indicate that the syntax of noun phrases headed by anthroponyms is driven by other grammatical features. |
