Abstract:[Free accentual variants – specifications and updates]
This paper re-examines the topic of the mobility of the Romanian accent, approached from a normative perspective. The analysis enabled me to reach the following conclusions: the etymological criterion prevails upon the analogical one; despite this prevalence, numerous cases where the analogical stress pattern becomes prominent need to be taken into consideration at the normative level; in most of the cases, multiple etymology emphasizes the direct origin of words with different accentual patterns, and their concurrence is allowable, as a speaker’s choice, at the level of literary language; in order for these analogical variants to be labelled as literary, they should be complemented by structural arguments.
Key words:accent, etymology, literary language, analogy, concurrence
