| Abstract: | [A prolific word family: baron] The process of vocabulary enrichment in post-communist Romania is alert and includes both borrowings from foreign languages and resources derived from internal means of lexical growth. This paper discusses one of the terms that have enjoyed considerable acknowledgment – by virtue of its frequency – in contemporary mass media. Twenty-nine suffixed forms of the noun baron were recorded, more than two thirds of which are omitted by specialised literature. On the one hand, the examples provided attest not only to the diversity of the word family of a term, but also to the semantic and stylistic-functional shifts in contemporary mass media and the high expressivity of these mutations, as a result of the restless quest for expressive novelty, which is specific to political discourse and journalistic language alike. On the other hand, the examples prove the fact that lexicography cannot keep up with language rejuvenation, regardless of whether one refers to lexical entries or connotative and derivative meanings. |
