| Abstract: | [Metonymies as implicit content in the Romanian- and French-language written press] This article aims at describing the mechanism generating implicit contents by means of metonymy in the media discourse in Romanian and French, as well as explaining the way the press readers decipher these significations by completing the explicit semantic content of the linguistic utterances with a complex set of implicit cultural contents shared by the journalist and the reader. The use of metonymy in the media discourse indicates a rhetorical strategy emphasizing the story line and persuading the readers, although there are some types of metonymy which are frequently inserted in articles and therefore considered a feature of the ordinary (that is non technical) language. |
