| Abstract: | [The modal constructions of the verb fi ‘be’] This paper describes an inventory of the patterns in which the verb fi ‘be’ functions as a modal verb, expressing either deontic (obligation) or dynamic (volition) modality. We associate the deontic meaning with the raising verb status and the dynamic one with the control verb status of the verb fi. In both situations, the common feature is that fi has a small clause as its complement. We try to exploit this feature further in order to get a unified approach for all the fi-types (copulative, auxiliary or modal). |
