Abstract:[Allocutive agreement in imperative clauses]
This paper focuses on the alternation that arises in imperative forms in old and regional varieties of Romanian, where the clitics and the affixed person morphemes may display alternative ordering in their cluster on the verb. It is argued that the ordering alternation is not free but depends on whether the addressee feature is or is not mapped to syntax. When the mapping takes place, Romanian imperative forms display allocutive agreement. Similar alternation of morpheme ordering in imperative clauses appears in Albanian, yielding the conclusion that this might constitute another Balkan Sprachbund property.
Key words:imperative clauses, allocutive agreement, addressee, pragmatic roles
