Abstract:Recognized primarily as a stylist, G. I. Tohăneanu is also a refined translator from Latin. Analyzing closely his translations (the only Romanian version of Macrobiusʼs encyclopedia, Saturnalia, but also the three acclaimed works by Virgil: the Aeneid, the Georgics and the Eclogues), we discover not just the translator’s mark and the elements of his art, but can also discern a translation theory. Without explaining this complex act, G. I. Tohăneanu denotes the fundamental dimensions of the translation/translatorʼs value not through a theoretical design, of conceptualizing the process, but by the power of his translation creation itself. The present article investigates all this, using mostly examples from the Virgilian epic.
