Abstract:[The Kitsch Within the Space of Cultural Communication]
The dynamics of social life determines an entire series of mutations at the level of communication, even within the rural, traditional environments. Today we communicate differently because we think differently, which also holds true in the case of traditional folklore (music: text and tune), of dance, of customs, of traditional visual arts, etc. In this study we focus upon the phenomenon called Kitsch, which will be interpreted as a modality of communicating a distorted type of identity. In order to interpret these elements, we will discuss the way in which the folklore product evolves towards the kitsch product, having in view the elements of traditional art, but also several customs. We notice how an entire range of functional elements are detracted from their original function towards elements that have a purely decorative role, and thus, they are deprived of any signification. We are confronted with superficial images, lacking any symbolic depth. As many specialists have already noticed, Kitsch is born through a thirst of accumulation, under the pretext of functionality. In fact, we may notice an overcrowding of objects and micro-events, which are accepted out of snobbery. Under the effect of modern art, of the industiral procedures of multiplication, of the lack of religious education, and of the „death” of the traditional communities, the art of kitsch is born. This matter forces us to bring back into discussion a few fundamental concepts such as: tradition, inovation, modernity, authenticity, non-authenticity, assumed identity, constructed identity, etc. By redescovering the authenticity of artistic and religious experience, we could give an answer to the question whether we can fight kitsch; nevertheless, for this undertaking we should orientate our research towards the conditions that facilitate this phenomenon, and not towards its forms of expression.
